These machines are three-axis CNC systems, not all-electric benders. Their feed and rotation axes are electric servo-driven; the bending axis is hydraulically driven under CNC control.
Automatic sequencing does not necessarily include automatic loading and unloading. Confirm material handling separately in the proposed configuration.
1. Reduce manual positioning between bends
Consider a part with five bends in several planes. On an NC setup, the operator may need to locate the first bend, make the bend, advance the tube to the next position, rotate it to the required orientation, and confirm the position before continuing.
A CNC machine carries out the programmed feed, rotation and bend movements within its operating envelope. The benefit can include:
- Less measuring and repositioning during each cycle.
- Fewer opportunities to use the wrong bend location or rotation.
- More consistent execution of a proven sequence.
- Reduced repetitive handling between bends.
The actual time savings depend on part complexity, loading, tooling and the existing process. Compare complete production cycles—not just bending speed.
2. Control the whole part, not only the bend angle
A multi-bend part can have individually correct bend angles and still fail to fit its assembly. The problem might be incorrect spacing between bends, incorrect rotation between bend planes, accumulated positioning errors, or an end that finishes in the wrong location.
Automating feed and rotation helps control these relationships. For parts that must fit fixtures, mate with other components or repeat across production batches, that can be more important than a small difference in the accuracy of one bend.
CNC control helps repeat a proven process; it does not eliminate the need to establish and inspect that process. Material variation, tooling condition, springback and setup still influence the finished part.
3. Add internal support when the application needs it
The ERCO Bender 65 and 76 are mandrel-bending machines. A properly selected mandrel supports the tube internally during forming.
Depending on the application, mandrel support and suitable supporting tooling can help control flattening or ovality, wrinkling and cross-section distortion, and improve bend quality on thinner-wall tube or tighter radii.
The need for a mandrel depends on the combination of material, diameter, wall thickness, bend radius and acceptance requirements. There is no single radius threshold that determines every application.
Mandrel capability and CNC automation are separate purchasing decisions. A shop may need internal support without needing automatic feed and rotation. Conversely, another shop may value automatic positioning primarily because its parts repeat in volume. The right recommendation should address both needs.
4. Store and recall proven part programs
Repeat orders become easier to manage when a validated bending sequence can be stored and recalled. Ercolina publishes USB-based program storage and communication for the ERCO Bender range, together with programmable material springback settings for each bend angle.
A well-documented repeat job should include:
- The correct part-program revision.
- Material specification and tube dimensions.
- Tooling identification and approved setup information.
- Springback corrections.
- Inspection requirements.
This can reduce the work needed to reconstruct a previous job. However, recalling a program does not mean every new material batch can run without verification. First-off inspection remains important after material, tooling or setup changes.
5. Manage springback through the program
Tube material springs back after bending. The machine may need additional movement beyond the desired finished angle to compensate. The ERCO Bender 65 and 76 provide programmable springback settings for individual bend angles.
That allows the operator to establish and retain corrections as part of the process rather than relying on memory or repeated manual adjustment.
The correction must still be determined for the application. Programmable springback compensation is not the same as automatically measuring every finished bend and correcting it without a trial. For a new part or material, qualify the process and inspect the result.
6. Improve setup and sequence planning
Published ERCO Bender features include:
- Interactive touchscreen controls.
- Automatic and manual bend sequencing.
- YBC and XYZ input.
- Tangent or centerline programming.
- Graphic bend simulation.
- Programmable mandrel positioning.
- Independent pressure- and clamp-die adjustment.
- Quick-change tooling.
- Programmable tailstock interference-zone monitoring.
These functions support programming, setup and sequence development. Simulation and interference monitoring are useful aids, but they do not replace safe proving of the program, correct machine data or physical clearance checks.
Optional CAD-import capabilities are also available. Confirm supported file formats, software versions, licenses and pricing rather than assuming they are included in every machine.
7. Expand the range of work you can evaluate
A CNC mandrel bender may help a shop take on more complex repeat work, including suitable handrails and architectural fabrication, vehicle and equipment tube assemblies, furniture and display frames, exhaust and other formed tube products, and industrial tubing assemblies.
The machine’s extended bending head and available underhead clearance can help accommodate certain complex shapes. Nevertheless, each part requires a clearance and tooling review.
The published standard bending direction is right-hand. Do not assume these machines have the same clockwise-and-counter-clockwise capability as a different multi-axis platform.
For some approved designs, producing a continuous bent component can also reduce the number of welded elbows or separate fittings. Evaluate that benefit against the drawing, structural requirements and applicable standards.
ERCO Bender 65 or ERCO Bender 76?
The right choice starts with material and geometry, not simply selecting the larger model.
