These are catalog ratings, not approval for every material grade, radius or part. Confirm the exact configuration with CML USA. The 65 is worth considering when regular work fits its verified capacity and tooling; the 76 provides additional published capacity for larger tube and pipe.
Review material strength, actual OD and wall thickness, centerline bend radius, clamping lengths, bend sequence, part clearance and acceptable ovality, wall thinning and finish. Specify the complete tooling package, including any mandrel and wiper die. Pipe size and tube outside diameter are not interchangeable.

Put ErcoCut profiling near the bending operation
The ErcoCut EC220PHT 75M adds programmed cutting for rail-to-post connections, braces and adjoining components. Suitable operations include saddles, copes, notches, holes, slots, angled ends and bevels supported by the supplied configuration.
A programmed path establishes feature positions from a defined reference, reducing repeated measuring and manual notching. Consistent connection geometry can make fit-up more predictable and reduce hand-fitting before welding. Inspect dimensions, dross and edge condition; a plasma-cut surface is not automatically ready for welding or assembly.
Arrange the area for safe material flow
Keep transfers short without crowding the equipment. Allow room for loading long stock, the bender’s full material sweep, guarding, operator access and unloading. Provide proper plasma extraction and spark control, and protect bending tooling and controls from cutting debris. Nearby machines do not automatically constitute an interlocked, unattended production cell.
Layout, identification and marking
Keep each blank associated with its part number, revision, loading end and orientation. This is especially useful when similar left-hand and right-hand rail components move through the shop together.
Confirm marking or engraving equipment in the EC220 quotation. Do not assume that a dedicated marker is standard. Where it is not supplied, labels, printed travelers or an approved manual method can identify parts. Permanent marks must be compatible with the finish and structural requirements.
Part identification is different from bend-location marking. A three-axis CNC bender positions material through its approved program rather than requiring manual alignment of a mark for every bend.
A common CAD model also does not guarantee direct program transfer between cutter and bender. Confirm file formats, software modules and each machine’s postprocessor. Maintain a common part number, revision and reference system.
Cut features before or after bending?
Processing straight stock can simplify loading, but pre-cut holes and notches must not compromise bending or workholding.
Consider profiling before bending when:
- Features lie outside the bend and tooling-contact areas.
- Enough material remains for reliable gripping and support.
- Cut edges will not interfere with the mandrel.
- The final feature positions can be verified after bending.
Consider profiling or trimming after bending when:
- A hole or slot would distort during the bend.
- A notch removes material needed for clamping.
- A cut edge could catch or damage internal tooling.
- Final trimming is needed to achieve the assembly dimensions.
Choose a suitable post-bend process and fixture; do not assume the straight-stock plasma cutter can load every bent component. Approve the complete sequence on a first article before releasing the batch.
For straightforward cutoffs, consider a cold saw
The plasma cutter earns its value on profiling and multiple features. For accurate straight blanks, a cold saw may provide the more direct route. Ask CML USA about the appropriate Ercolina offering or Pedrazzoli circular cold saw for your material and volume.
With the correct blade, speed, feed, clamping and coolant, a cold saw can produce consistent blank lengths, square reference ends and repeatable miters. A relatively clean cut can reduce preparation, but cold sawing does not guarantee burr-free ends.
- Manual: varied, lower-volume work.
- Semi-automatic: repeated cycles where powered operation is useful.
- Automatic feed: batches of repeated lengths that justify greater automation.
Confirm capacity, electrical supply and blade selection for the exact model. Aluminum requires an appropriate nonferrous-cutting arrangement; do not assume a steel-cutting setup is suitable.
For larger sections or varied straight and miter cutoff work, also compare Pedrazzoli metal-cutting bandsaws. Match the blade, section capacity and miter capacity to the job. CML USA supplies and supports both Ercolina bending equipment and Pedrazzoli saws, so ask for a coordinated cutting-and-bending application review.
Clean, burr-free ends protect the mandrel and the process
Internal burrs, trapped chips and plasma dross can obstruct mandrel insertion, score tooling or the tube interior, increase drag and contaminate the tooling area.
- Verify blank length and required end geometry.
- Deburr the inside and outside without excessively changing the end shape.
- Remove chips, dross and contamination.
- Inspect the tube interior and weld seam where relevant.
- Apply approved lubrication and confirm mandrel clearance.
- Follow the tooling supplier’s setup procedure.
Do not force a mandrel through an obstructed or undersized tube. Resolve the preparation or sizing issue first. Read our mandrel tooling buyer’s guide for tooling-selection considerations.
A practical handrail production sequence
Approved drawing → blank preparation → appropriate profiling → deburring and cleaning → CNC bending → inspection → assembly and finishing.
Some jobs need profiling or final trimming after bending. Preserve that flexibility rather than forcing every design through the same route.
Keep an approved setup record covering material, blank length, part revision, loading orientation, programs, tooling, springback settings, lubrication and first-piece inspection dimensions. Saved programs reduce repeated work; they do not remove the need to check the current setup.
Measure the complete job—not just the bend cycle
Record programming, material changes, loading, cutting, preparation, bending, first-piece approval, finishing and rework. A short machine cycle has limited value if parts wait between stations or require correction during assembly.
Cycle times depend on the part and setup. Claims about producing a handrail “in seconds” should be supported by a timed, identified example. Job-site readiness also depends on the approved design, required assembly and finish, inspection and installation requirements.
Automate to the level that pays for your work
An ERCO Bender 65 or 76 provides programmable handrail bending. An ErcoCut 220 adds flexible profiling. A properly selected cold saw prepares straightforward blanks efficiently. Choose the combination that removes repeated work from your actual jobs rather than buying automation that will sit unused.
Send CML USA a representative drawing, material grade, actual tube or pipe dimensions, bend radii and expected quantities. Ask for a review of tooling, workflow, software, installation, training and first-part acceptance.
