Ercolina ErcoCut 220 vs. Bend-Tech Dragon A400: Buyer’s Guide

Back to all Buyer’s Guides

Compare capacity, sturdy construction, bevel preparation, profile handling and software—not just the plasma torch.

A CNC plasma tube cutter can replace repeated manual layout, notching and hole cutting with a coordinated, repeatable process. The best investment is the machine that handles your actual material and produces acceptable parts with a manageable setup.

The Ercolina ErcoCut EC220PHT 75M and Bend-Tech Dragon A400 both automate tube fabrication. For shops prioritizing larger tube capacity, automatic beveling and broad profile capability in the supplied arrangement, the ErcoCut offers important advantages to evaluate.

Machine envelope, cutting-source capacity and finished-part quality are different specifications. Confirm material grade, wall thickness, profile dimensions, loading and unloading limits before purchase.

1. Angle and channel: Ercolina is already equipped

The standard Dragon A400 cannot process angle iron or C-channel without its optional motorized Powered Gate. That equipment must be included in the configuration and price when you need those profiles. A machine purchased without it needs an upgrade before processing angle or channel.

The ErcoCut EC220PHT 75M is already set up to process its approved angle and channel sizes, along with round, square and rectangular tubing, without purchasing a separate powered-gate upgrade for those profiles.

For a shop handling mixed fabrication work, this means broader profile capability in the supplied arrangement. Compare complete quotations, not a fully configured Ercolina against a Dragon price that omits the gate required for your work.

Gate replacement is different from normal adjustment

The ErcoCut accommodates different approved tube sizes without a replacement gate for each diameter. Normal chuck, jaw and support adjustments still apply; its published configuration has manual front and rear chucks.

For accuracy in comparison, the Dragon also has adjustable gate jaws. Bend-Tech’s documentation ties the Powered Gate requirement to angle and channel, not to a threshold round-tube diameter. The upgrade adds a C-axis motor and ring gear to synchronize gate rotation with the rear chuck.

Ask each supplier to demonstrate the change from round tube to square tube and then to angle or channel. Record adjustment time and identify any extra hardware required.

2. Larger tube capacity can expand the work you accept

The ErcoCut’s published round range extends to 8-5/8 inches OD, compared with 6 inches OD for the A400. Its maximum published square size is 6 inches versus 4 inches.

This additional envelope is useful when your work includes larger equipment frames, pipe connections and varied fabrication. It may let you keep suitable jobs in-house rather than outsource them or return to manual layout and cutting.

Check the complete part: a large outside diameter does not establish the permitted wall thickness, cutting speed, supported weight or quality of a small hole.

3. Weight capacity: pounds per foot versus total load

Ercolina publishes 30 lb/ft. Bend-Tech publishes a 400 lb total workpiece limit. These are different types of ratings and should not be presented as directly interchangeable.

For a uniform 24-foot piece, the Dragon’s 400 lb total limit corresponds to an average of 16.7 lb/ft: 400 ÷ 24. This is a calculation for that stock length—not an official Dragon per-foot rating.

For heavy-stock buying decisions, confirm both the distributed-load and total-load limits of the proposed machine, together with loading and finished-part support. Do not multiply Ercolina’s 30 lb/ft rating by its bed length and treat the result as an approved total load without factory confirmation.

4. Sturdy construction supports consistent cutting

A capable plasma source cannot compensate for material that shifts, sags or rotates inconsistently. The ErcoCut combines supported workholding with controlled motion to maintain the relationship between the cutting head and material.

  • Low-backlash helical rack-and-pinion carriage drive supports controlled travel along the stock.
  • Low-backlash planetary gearboxes support accurate rotational movement.
  • Brushless motors with integrated absolute encoders provide position information for the drive system.
  • Front and rear workholding secure the material through positioning and cutting.
  • Automatic supports adjust with the programmed profile to help maintain material alignment.

These are practical construction details to evaluate when cutting long or heavier material. Sturdy construction is about the complete system—frame, supports, workholding and drives—not machine appearance alone.

The Dragon also advertises support and anti-backlash drive features. Demonstrate the Ercolina difference with representative stock and measured results rather than unsupported claims of superior accuracy or service life.

5. Closed-loop drives and absolute-position feedback

Ercolina’s closed-loop drive approach uses position feedback to control movement, including coordinated rotation and linear travel. That coordination matters when holes must align around a tube or when several features must meet accurately in an assembly.

Encoder feedback lets the drive compare commanded movement with motor position and respond to error. Combined with low-backlash mechanics and correct setup, it supports repeatable motion as working loads change. Motor feedback alone does not measure every source of error at the workpiece.

What is documented about Dragon’s motors?

A June 2021 case study from motion-component supplier Thomson identifies stepper-driven A and Z toolhead axes on the Dragon A400. This is dated, axis-specific evidence—not proof that every axis on a current A400 is an open-loop stepper. Ask for the current supplied motor and feedback specifications.

Does the machine know its position after shutdown?

Absolute-position capability, not closed-loop control alone, determines whether routine homing can be avoided. With the appropriate absolute encoders and controller configuration, an axis can retain or recover its position after a normal shutdown. Bend-Tech’s published A400 startup manual includes axis homing.

For the quoted EC220, confirm position recovery on each axis during a startup demonstration. Do not transfer the EC245L flyer’s explicit no-rehoming claim to every EC220 configuration without confirmation. Also distinguish machine reference from workpiece zero: moving stock in a chuck or recovering from a fault may still require alignment and safety checks.

6. Automatic beveling adds weld-preparation capability

The EC220PHT 75M flyer lists automatic bevel cutting to 45° right and left. For shops producing repeated welded assemblies, this can reduce separate preparation and handling.

A miter changes the end-cut angle. A bevel prepares the edge through the wall thickness. They are not the same operation.

  • Prepare suitable edges within the programmed cutting workflow.
  • Reduce transfers to a separate preparation station.
  • Repeat the approved preparation across a batch.
  • Evaluate the complete joint instead of relying on hand-ground consistency.

The reviewed Dragon A400 product page does not establish equivalent automatic bevel-head capability. If bevels matter to your work, require a written specification and representative cut from both suppliers.

Specify the bevel angle, root face, wall thickness and welding procedure. Integrated beveling does not guarantee that cleaning, finishing or inspection can be eliminated.

7. Sync3D: full CAD/CAM, not just a file viewer

Ercolina’s integrated Sync3D offering provides a design-to-production CAD/CAM workflow for tube-and-profile parts and assemblies. Its value is the ability to create and revise the job, prepare it for cutting and generate machine-ready output without unnecessary transfers between separate applications.

  • Original design: create components rather than relying exclusively on imported drawings.
  • Complex multi-piece assemblies: develop and edit connected parts while reviewing how they fit together.
  • Repeated features: create hole arrays, slots and patterns without rebuilding each feature individually.
  • Compatible CAD import: bring customer geometry into the workflow for review and preparation.
  • Nesting: arrange pieces along stock to improve utilization, with the supplied nesting module.
  • Simulation and G-code: preview the proposed path and generate the program for the configured machine.

The detailed integrated CAD/CAM, assembly-editing, simulation and native G-code description is documented in Ercolina’s August 2026 EC245L flyer. For an EC220 purchase, have the quote identify the included Sync3D version, design and nesting modules, importers, office licenses and machine-specific postprocessor. The advertised laser package should not be assumed to establish every plasma software entitlement.

Dragon also offers its own CAD/CAM design, import and nesting tools, with integrated marking and engraving workflows. Compare both systems using your own simple part and a multi-piece assembly—not just a demonstration of a supplier’s prepared file.

8. CNC makes profiling and complex cuts easier to repeat

CNC coordinates stock position, rotation and cutting-head movement. Suitable jobs can combine saddles, copes, holes, slots, angled ends and features around multiple faces in an approved program rather than repeated manual layout.

  1. Define the material, profile, wall thickness and finished dimensions.
  2. Create the part or import a supported file.
  3. Preview geometry and cutting paths; verify the proposed process.
  4. Load and secure the stock, and check supports and alignment.
  5. Cut and inspect the first piece before releasing the batch.
  6. Save the approved job for repeat work, retaining required setup checks.

Simple work should remain simple. Ask the operator to create a cutoff, notch and hole pattern at the supplied interface, then edit a dimension and recall a saved job. CNC automation does not eliminate safe setup, trained operators or first-piece inspection.

Which machine fits your shop?

Prioritize an ErcoCut demonstration when you need the larger published tube envelope, integrated bevel preparation, angle-and-channel capability without an optional gate upgrade, or a sturdy supported system for varied fabrication work.

Include the Dragon A400 in your evaluation when your work fits its capacity and its marking, engraving and Dragon software workflow are important. Include its powered-gate option if you need angle and channel.

Compare equivalent installed packages and the total cost per accepted part: programming, setup, loading, cutting, consumables, finishing, inspection, installation and training. Using the same plasma-source brand does not make the machines equivalent, and a source’s severance rating is not the complete machine’s approved tube-wall capacity.
